Professional Experience

Mr. Cook graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He then graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1954 and was awarded a Doctor of Jurisprudence.

Mr. Cook then joined the firm of Mason, Kolehmainen, Rathburn & Wyss in Chicago, Illinois, where he was an associate from 1954 to 1959. He next joined a firm ultimately known as Hume, Clement, Brinks, Willian, Olds & Cook from 1959 to 1976. Mr. Cook has been the senior partner of the present firm or a predecessor firm since 1977, specializing during that entire time in patent litigation.

Mr. Cook has had primary litigation responsibility, at the trial and appellate levels, for over 150 patent, trademark, copyright, and unfair competition cases in federal and state courts. He has been actively involved in well over 145 patent infringement actions, primarily in the electrical, electronic, and mechanical disciplines. These actions have generated about 50 reported opinions by trial and appellate courts. Many of his patent infringement actions have advanced to trial, in both jury and non-jury formats. Long before jury trials were favorable, his client obtained a jury verdict against IBM including a multi-million dollar damage award, which led to a world-wide settlement of many times more than the damage award.
