Professional Experience

Edward D. Manzo (b. 1950), a founder of the firm, earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 1972 and a law degree from the State University of New York Law School in 1975.  He is admitted to practice in New York, Illinois, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and several federal courts.

Mr. Manzo has decades of experience in intellectual property law.  He has litigated utility and design patents, tradedress, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. Representing plaintiffs or defendants at trial and appeal, he has collaborated with some of Chicago's most eminent general litigation lawyers.  His experience also includes intellectual property counseling and opinion work, negotiating patent licenses, and all aspects of obtaining patents, including interference practice at the Patent and Trademark Office.  His clients include established manufacturers, corporations with substantial dockets of patents, start-up ventures, and individual inventors. He has worked in diverse electrical, medical, and mechanical technologies.

He devotes substantial time to the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) – the oldest intellectual property bar association in the United States.  He is currently President-elect (May 2009-10) and Membership Chairman (2007-09), and has also served as Vice President ( 2008-09), Litigation Committee Chairman (2002-05) and on IPLAC's Board of Managers (2005-07).  He is the principal author of IPLAC’S amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in Illinois Tool Works, Inc. et al. v. Independent Ink (filed July 2005), its amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in the Phillips v. AWH en banc appeal (filed Sept. 2004), its amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in KSR Int'l Co. v. Teleflex, Inc. (filed Oct. 2006), and its amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in Bilski v. Doll (filed Aug. 2009).  He is the editor of annual reviews of case law published by IPLAC at http://iplac.org concerning patent claim construction, entitled Federal Circuit Review of Markman Issues (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005).  Further, Mr. Manzo is editor-in-chief of Claim Construction in the Federal Circuit, 2006 et seq., and Patent Claim Interpretation - Global Edition, 2008-2009 ed., both annual books published by West Legalworks of Thomson-WestThomson-West is publishing and distributing these books as references to be used by judges, attorneys and patent agents practicing in this area of the law.  Mr. Manzo has also published articles in several other publications.  For further information on his books, please select from the following links.

Mr. Manzo has lectured on patent law at such venues as DePaul Law School, John Marshall Law School, West Legalworks, LSI, APLF, AIPLA, PLI and other organizations.  He has also been a panelist to discuss issues in patent law for IPLAC, SkyRadio, DePaul Law School (on whose Intellectual Property Advisory Board he sits), and John Marshall Law School.  He is listed in Who's Who in the World (2002 et seq.), Who's Who in America (2000 et seq.), and Who's Who in American Law (1990-91 et seq.).  He holds the highest rating in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory and was elected into Leading Lawyers in Illinois and Illinois Superlawyers.

Civic Activities

Mr. Manzo is a patron of The Stradivari Society (1995-date) and loans an Italian concert violin to a “rising star” soloist.  He currently sits on the boards of the Lake Forest Symphony and the Christian International Scholarship Foundation.  He served for two years as president of the Sicilian-American Cultural Association.  He funded the Edward Manzo Patent Law Scholarship at DePaul University College of Law and now underwrites a series of patent law lectures there.  Further, Mr. Manzo is an adjunct professor of law at DePaul.
