Copyright Attorney Naperville

Cook Alex’s copyright attorney solutions are focused on helping clients protect and defend their rights.

A copyright is a broad term that defines the creation of an original work. This can include taking a photograph, writing an original story, performing a new song, or some range of originality. Making the creator the owner.

Copyrights can be owned by someone other than the creator through works created by contract. Where a company or organization can hire a person and be the legal owner of the work within the employment.

But what does a copyright provide?

US copyright laws provide original authors, or creator, with exclusive rights that include:

-The reproduction of the work in phonorecords or copies

-Derivative work based on the original work

-The public distribution of copies of the work by sale, rental, lease, or lending

-The performance of the work if the medium allows. This can be true for literary, musical, or dramatic works

-A public performance of the work through a digital audio transmission

How Long does a Copyright Last?

In the US, protection length depends on the creation of the original work. Under current law, works created on or after January 1, 1978, have a term of life of the author plus seventy years after their death. Joint works term lasts for seventy years after the last surviving author’s death.

Works made for hire, anonymous, or pseudonymous have copyright protection of 95 years from publication, or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.
